Welcome Letter to All Alums From Dr. Sparks

Welcome to all Maryland Band Alumni!

Homecoming is upon us and The Big Event will take place on Friday night, October 24th as we will be hosting all participants of the Maryland Band Program at a reception in the John E. Wakefield Band Rehearsal Hall. We are expecting band alumni dating back into the 1940’s. We expect all baton twirlers, flag twirlers, color guard members and we are especially proud that we have located our founding Pom Pom members and will have many of them back for this once in a lifetime Celebration. If you ever played a horn, beat a drum, danced, twirled, directed, or even just carried water and apples to the band members of this University — We want you here! This evening is for you!

Homecoming Online Registration Now Available

Online registration is now available for Homecoming 2008! Sorry for the delay everyone — PayPal's Payment Notification took a little longer to integrate and test than I thought. Remember that registration has been extended to Monday, October 6th, whether you pay online or by mail.

New UMBAO Web Site

Welcome to the new UMBAO web site! We hope that you'll find this redesign to be both more intuitive and useful.

History Book Last Call

Thanks to all the alumni whom have sent in your bowl memories for the upcoming Maryland Bands history book being published later this year! But we still need more help…

Contribute to the Auxiliary History

Attention Silks, Flags, Color Guard, Poms, Dancers, Twirlers, and Majorettes! We need you help for the centennial history book being published later this year.

"On the Road" Anecdotes Requested

Update 9/4/08: The deadline from the publisher has been extended through November, so keep sending in your anecdotes!

We are asking for help with the Maryland Bands' centennial history book being published during the 2008-2009 academic year. The package will include 216 pages of centennial history, a 40-page Maryland Band Song Book, and a CD of school songs. We are currently developing the photo layout and narrative for the Wakefield/Sparks years, and the centennial celebration itself that will make up the last three chapters of the centennial history. This work is to be completed and to the publisher by Early Week — the last week this August (see update above).

Donate to the University Archives

If you have photos, articles, magazines, buttons, posters, etc. that you want to donate to the permanent Maryland Band Collection in the University Archives, please make a short inventory of these items and send the document and the materials you wish to donate to Anne Turkos, the University Archivist. She will be pleased to have these items for the Archives. If you are on campus, you can also hand-deliver donations to Anne in the Archives at Hornbake Library.

Annual Photos Needed for History Book

We are gathering a comprehensive index of annual band photos, including marching band, concert band, symphonic band, SWE, and others. That number also includes 30 years of ROTC bands!

We are missing many annual pics from the last several decades. If you have annual group photos from this list from any band ensemble, please let us know at taylorrwt@verizon.net so we can find the best way to scan them into our upcoming History Book.
